Snoring and CPAP are not sensual
Patients with sleep apnea have a decrease in intimacy and sexual relations. Around 27% of American couples sleep in separate beds due to snoring and sleep apnea. Patients who are treated for their sleep apnea may see an improvement their sex lives. "It could be that they are less tired once the sleep apnea is being treated," says Terri E. Weaver, RN, PhD, associate professor and chairwoman of the bio behavioral and health sciences division at the University of Pennsylvania. She presented her findings at the American Thoracic Society annual meeting.
Sleep apnea associated with snoring, may decrease women's sexual function by reducing sexual desire, sensation, lubrication, orgasm as well as negatively affecting their relationship with their partner. Some women that have their husbands using a CPAP mask and equipment get the idea of having an astronaut on their bed and sexual interest is decreased.
According to a 2005 study by the National Sleep Foundation, nearly 25% of couples in the United States admit to being so sleepy that they have lost interest in lovemaking. People who snore also appear to have inferior sex lives, as one-third of people say that snoring causes a problem in their relationship.
Men with sleep apnea tend to have lower levels of testosterone, which can lower libido and lead to ED -Erectile Dysfunction.
A recent study found that men on viagra tend to snore more and were twice as likely to experience sleep apnea. Researchers also found that breathing was more disordered -- with more stops per hour among the men who took Viagra before sleeping. For this reason some Doctors recomend to take viagra during the morning hours in order to give some time to your body to eliminate it from the system before going to sleep.
CPAP is the most recognized treatment, one of the big problems in the treatment of sleep apnea is getting people to accept it and stay with it. About 30 to 50% of patients are in no compliance or intolerant to CPAP.
Oral Appliance therapy could be the solution for those patients.
